The establishment of the Industrial Engineering program at Amirkabir University of Technology dates back to 1975, when a specialization titled "Production Engineering" was introduced within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Shortly thereafter, its name was changed to "Industrial Engineering." In 1976, to expand and give greater prominence to this field, an independent unit named the "Industrial Engineering Group" was established. It began its activities with eight faculty members and 30 students. By 1978, two additional faculty members with doctoral degrees joined the group.
The pivotal moment for the growth and qualitative advancement of Industrial Engineering at Amirkabir University of Technology occurred after the victory of the Islamic Revolution. At the start of this era, the "Industrial Engineering Group" evolved into the "Faculty of Industrial Engineering" and was relocated to the old faculty building adjacent to the university's amphitheater. The first cohort of Industrial Engineering graduates entered the country's industrial workforce in 1983.
In 1988, the faculty began admitting master's students in two specializations:"Industrial Engineering"and"Industrial Management." In 1989, a new undergraduate specialization, "Systems Planning and Analysis," was introduced.
To strengthen the connection between academia and industry, and to conduct research and implement various projects in the diverse fields of industrial engineering, the "Industrial Engineering and Productivity Research Center" was established in 1991 through the efforts of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering. Another strategic milestone was the establishment of the doctoral program, which welcomed its first students in October 1994.
In 1993, to address the needs of that period, the "Economic and Social Systems Engineering" specialization was launched at the master’s level. Over time, and in response to global scientific advancements and the country's needs, various new specializations at the master’s level were introduced within the Faculty of Industrial Engineering.
